SAVE BRIDGWATER POST OFFICE

Any town without a post office has something very important missing. But if Bridgwater loses its office the effects could be extremely serious. We are a big business town generating sackloads of essential mail. And our residents have come to rely on the pension and banking services the post office offered. For years things have been on the slide. The original office, in the shadow of Admiral Blake's statue, was closed some years ago - in my view a very unwise decision. Since then the post office has relied upon franchising to a shop in Angel Place. It may have looked good on paper, but it plainly didn't work. The queues at the counters were ludicrous. The staff couldn't cope but the margins were insufficient to guarantee keeping the facility open. The threat of closure is now real.

But the post office is proposing the most absurd stop-gap measure - a portacabin unit plonked in the car park.

It is like trying to heal a severed limb with sticking plaster.

I intend to chase up post office bosses, press for answers and I will take this matter to Parliament if necessary. Bridgwater deserves better. The post office ought to know better. The deal on offer for franchises is in no sense up-to-the mark.
