QUELLING THE QUANGOS

"Quasi Autonomous Non-Governmental Organisations" - or Quangos - have become a dangerous growth industry in Britain. There are hundreds of them. They wield power. They spend money - usually our money - and they do not always spend it wisely. But because they are "autonomous" they do not have to answer to Parliament. That means it is extraordinarily difficult to do anything to control them.

I believe this situation cannot be allowed to continue. Some of these organisations may well perform useful public services - like the specialist advisory boards that provide advice to Government departments about complex matters like medicines. But many others could be scrapped without tears or amalgamated to reduce  running costs. The heads are appointed, not elected. They often have big budgets and vague remits.

I am now seeking your assistance to identify the worst examples of the Quango breed. You may think you have never come across one, but you can bet your life you have. There are so many Quangos operating in so many areas you could write a book about it....and by heavens someone has:

This is their life!

It is a very expensive book, but you may find that the reference section of your local library can lay hands on a recent copy. Alternatively browse the online database of the Economic Research Council to spot the real rogues:

Then get in touch with me. ianliddellgrainger@hotmail.co.uk

With your help I pledge to name and shame the worst examples of the Quangocracy.
