COUNTY FARMS AT RISK

There are sixty farms currently in County Council ownership. It amounts to a very large acreage and is an extraordinary asset for Somerset in terms of agriculture and heritage. These tenanted working farms are not sudden acquisitions. They have been in Council hands for decades and they contribute to the economy and the ecology of the whole area. To sell them off in a rush during a recession seems a very strange action.

Its YOUR land

I have a lot of time for the hard-working people who manage the land on county farms, some of whom have now been given notice to quit as their tenancies run out. It is clearly the intention of the Council to sell the farms in order to capitalise on the sales and so reduce the burden of running council services. Everyone understands the financial pressures. But it is rather like selling the family silver. No wonder the farmers are alarmed. I am worried too.

The sale of these farms was organised in haste - some say undue haste. I wanted far better consultation. I wanted other alternatives to be fully explored. Don't hesitate to contact me
