How much access should we have to our coastline?
The Government wants to change the law and make pretty well every inch of the national coast accessible. But hang on - 70% of the coast is already open to the public. I have nothing against sensible change but I am doubtful about this. Who will decide? What will it cost? Where's the demand?
A new Government Bill has just arrived in the House of Commons - the Marine and Coastal Access Bill. There are elements within it that I will be attempting to change as it progresses through the Committee stage. I am not comnvinced that the proposed legislation takes proper account of out complex local landscape - particularly the River Parrett.
I staged a debate in the House of Commons on this general subject back in July 2007
We have a chunk of the longest and loveliest national trail in this constituency - the SouthWest Coastal path. If you have never walked it - even a small part of it - then you should be ashamed of yourself. It took great patience and diplomacy to create it and keep it spick, span and popular. In fact popularity is hardly a problem. We welcome walkers. And the SouthWest Coastal Path Association - that does so much of the hard work - takes enormous pride in encouraging people.Join us at the Minehead Marker sculpture and share the views!
